42 Peaks Terms & Conditions of rental

These are the terms and conditions that cover the clients rental of the vehicle. When you collect the vehicle we will ask you to sign these terms and conditions.

Minimum Hire

We have a minimum hire period of three nights rental. If you need It for only two nights this can be arranged but there will still be a three day charge. In July and August this rises to six day minimum rental period. If we have last minute availability we may consider shorter rentals, please enquire.

Number of Passengers

The VW California Ocean can take a maximum of four people at any time (including the driver).

Driver Requirements

1. On collection, all drivers should provide an original full driving license. We will need a copy of both parts of the paperwork. The hirer must also provide two additional original proof of address. The first proof of address can be a utility bill (Electricity, water, gas, broadband, council tax or landline). The second proof can be a TV/Internet/landline telephone bill, Bank or credit statement, credit card bill or statement or mortgage statement. Both proof of address must be dated within three months of the hire. The addresses must match with the driving licence.

2. Drivers must be aged 23 or over, but not older than 75 (contact us for exceptions as we may be able to agree these with our insurers).

3. Hold a full driving license valid in the United Kingdom (e.g. E.U. national license) for two years. Again contact us if you hold a different licence and we can speak to our insurers.

4. Within 21 days of the rental start date we will need to perform a licence check with the DVLA. To do this the driver(s) will need to give us a ‘check code’ which is valid for 21 days. Drivers can get the check code by visiting here –

5. The following persons are excluded from driving:

a. Persons who have had their licence suspended for any period in the last three years.

b. Persons who have been involved in more than one fault incident within the last three years.

c. Persons who had had more than two convictions with a maximum of 3 points per conviction.

d. Persons who have obtained a BA,DD or UT conviction.

e. Persons who have any mental or physical defect or infirmity or suffers from fits, diabetes or any heart complaint.

6. Drivers are responsible for all parking fines, speeding charges, tolls and congestion charges received by 42 Campers and must be reimbursed along with an administration charge of £25 in each case.

7. Maximum number of drivers per hire is 4.

8. All drivers must be present at the start of the hire.

Campervan Hire Rates Quoted include

1. EU & UK fully comprehensive insurance

2. EU & UK 24 hour breakdown cover

3. Unlimited mileage

4. VAT at the current rate

5. Self-drive insurance for 2 drivers. Additional drivers are just £10 per hire

6. The price does not include the insurance / security deposit, nor any insurance surcharges which may apply.

7. Inventory of stock items which must be returned at the end of the hire.

Booking and Payment

1. Bookings are not confirmed until 50% of the hire fee has been paid. We are happy to hold dates for a limited period of time, while the booking form is filled out and returned. On returning the booking form we will send an invoice which will need to be paid to confirm the booking.

2. We require a 50% deposit payment to be paid to confirm the booking. The second 50% payment will need to be paid four weeks prior to the start date of the hire. If the booking start date is within four weeks of the booking, we shall require the full hire fee paying at the time of booking.

3. If due to unforeseen circumstances on the hire day we are unable to hire you an identical vehicle to your booking you will be offered a full refund, but we cannot be liable for other holiday costs including campsites and ferries.

4. If a booking cannot happen due to co-vid and UK government directives, we will give you a full refund or you can re-book the time for future dates.

5. The hirer will inform us in advance of pick-up of European travel (which includes Republic of Ireland, Switzerland and all European Union countries).

Insurance and security deposit

1. Our Insurers impose the follow conditions:

a. An excess of £500.00 will apply for any insurance claim or £ 700.00 if the driver is 23 or 24.

b. The hirer will also be fully liable for replacement or repair of windows, tyres and the loss of any keys.

c. The insurance deposit will be used to cover any loss or damage to the inventory provided as well as damage to the vehicle.

d. Personal effects are not insured through this cover. It is the responsibility of the Hirer to provide their own insurance to cover personal items; we would recommend travel/holiday insurance is purchased from a reputable company.

e. The Insured vehicle shall not be used for the carriage of goods of an explosive, dangerous or hazardous nature or for the carriage of goods or passengers for hire and reward or any other form of profit or remuneration.

f. In the event of a claim resulting from the use of cooking/heating appliances, a 25% coinsurance excess will apply, subject to a minimum excess of £500. (£700 total excess for drivers aged 23 & 24).

2. We also take a £ 200 security deposit prior to the hire. £ 100 is to cover cleaning the interior of the vehicle and cooking utensils. The other £100 is to cover diesel, in the event the vehicle is not returned with a full tank of fuel.

3. We will invoice for the insurance excess and security deposit 7 days prior to the start date. These funds need to be cleared in our bank via a debit card or BACs transfer prior to the start of the hire. They can also be paid on a credit card. We will return the security deposit within 7 days of return of the vehicle once we have done a full inspection of the vehicle and its contents.

4. The vehicle is no smoking. A deduction of £100 will be made if there is evidence of smoking.

7. The vehicle must only be driven on roads except at a registered campsite or Festival.

8. The interior of the van and all cooking equipment and utensils used should be cleaned (wiped, swept and vacuumed) before return and the outside and any racks or equipment cleaned. Failure to return the van clean will lead to a £100 deduction. A cleaning deposit of £100 is taken on hire day.

9. The vehicle should be returned with a full tank of diesel fuel. We will give you the van with a full tank of fuel at the start of the hire.

10. The vehicle shall be returned by the agreed time on the final hire day (which will not be more than 24 hours after pickup for each hire day) otherwise an additional £25 per extra hour will be charged.

11. If you wish to bring a pet, you need to notify us in advance. There is an optional extra cost of £50, for pets. As pet hair is difficult to remove from our vans, we ask for an additional pet cleaning deposit of £100 (returnable subject to conditions).

14. We reserve the right to change the hire pick-up time, without changing the booking, if you do not turn up within an hour of your agreed pick up time and fail to notify us beforehand.

15. The hirer irrevocably authorise 42 Campers to deduct from the security deposit any amounts due, arising out of this agreement. The security deposit will be released/refunded directly to my payment card / bank account within 7 days after the return of the Campervan provided the vehicle is returned, undamaged, with no loss of inventory, with a clean interior and a full fuel tank.

16. We reserve the right to charge a £ 50 fee if the porta-potti is not emptied and cleaned properly prior to the return of the vehicle.

Cancellation Policy

1. Refunds of 75% of full fees are available up to 28 days prior to the hire start date. After that no refunds are allowed unless the cancellation is due to Government Co-vid policies or down to the discretion of 42 Campers.

Campervan Hire Extras

1. We maybe able to bring and collect the campervan to you. There maybe a charge for this depending on the distance from the base.

2. 4 Bike, Bike rack (subject to availability) £ 25.00 per hire

3. Roof Bars £ 25.00 per hire

4. Portable toilet and tent £ 25.00 per hire

5. Lotusgrill Barbecue, Barbecue utensils and one bag of charcoal £ 25.00 per hire

6. Campinggaz external cookers (For those who like cooking outside) £ 15.00 per hire including one campinggaz gas

6. Pet charge £ 50 per hire

Rental Charges

I will pay 42 Campers:

1. all rental charges

2. the security deposit.

3. the nominated cancellation fee in the event of cancellation of this agreement prior to acceptance of delivery of the vehicle

4. the cost of any damage to the vehicle or the property of any third party, subject to the insurance*

5. all government fees and duties etc

6. all parking fines, other fines or penalties, and/or accidents including third party property damage not reported on return of the vehicle; and associated administration costs incurred in relation to the vehicle during the rental period

7. the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs

Care and use of the vehicle

The Hirer is responsible for the care and security of the vehicle for the duration of the Rental Period and agrees to return the Vehicle to 42 Campers in same condition received, on the date specified. The Hirer will be liable for additional costs and charges if due care has not been taken. 

The customer agrees that during the rental period, they will not and will not allow the vehicle to be:

  • Driven otherwise than in a cautious, prudent and normal manner;

  • Used in a manner which could cause damage;

  • Driven in a prohibited area;

  • Driven by a person under the influence of alcohol or drugs or with a blood alcohol level in excess of that permitted by law;

  • Left with the ignition key in the vehicle while it is unoccupied

  • Damaged by:

    • Submersion in water

    • Contact with salt water

  • Used for any illegal purpose for any race, rally or contest

  • Used to tow any vehicle or trailer.

  • Used to carry passengers or property for hire or reward

  • Used to carry more persons than is permitted by any relevant authority or detailed in the vehicle manual or on the vehicle or specified in this agreement

  • Used to carry volatile liquids, gases, explosives or other corrosive or inflammable material

  • Otherwise used in breach of my obligations under this agreement.

Maintenance of the vehicle

The hirer take all reasonable steps to properly maintain the vehicle.

Subject to the terms of this agreement, the hirer will pay for the cost of repairing or replacing tyres damaged during the rental period and agree to:

  • Contact 42 Campers to notify them of damage to tyre immediately

  • Replacement of tyre to be the same tyre brand and quality or like for like if the brand is not available

  • Pay the full costs of repair or replacement directly to the garage or be liable for all costs of replacement

The hirer will be liable for any costs associated with the incorrect use of fuel. The campervan uses diesel fuel

The Hirer is responsible for checking oil & water fluid and adblue levels during hire time; top up as required using the provided fluids. It is highly unlikely that you will need to top these up.

Responsibility when accident occurs

In the event of any accident, loss or damage arising out of the use of the vehicle:

  • The hirer will notify 42 Campers immediately of the happening of the event. The hirer will call them but if contact cannot be made then the hirer will email them to notify them of damages and await for a response before leaving the place of the accident

  • The hirer will obtain the names and addresses of third parties and any witnesses and report the event to the nearest police station to get a crime number.

  • The hirer will not make any admission of liability to other parties; settlement offer or other like offer

  • The hirer assist 42 Campers Campers in handling any claim arising from any event, including providing all relevant information and attending court to give evidence

  • The hirer acknowledges that the excess or other amount due by me in respect of any damage arising from an accident, loss or damage is payable at the time of reporting the event and not at the completion of the rental period.

  • The hirer will pay for any costs relating to the delivery of a change over vehicle as a result of an accident regardless of which party is at fault. The cost of change over is dependent on the mileage from 42 Campers and time taken to deliver replacement vehicle and is at the discretion of 42 Campers.
