Frequently asked questions.
Who can drive the 42 Peaks Camper?
Our campervan comes with fully-comprehensive self-drive insurance included as standard. This is open to anyone aged 23-75 who has held a full licence for 2+ years with no more than 6 points in the last three years.
We have an easy booking form for each driver to complete which we'll email you on confirmation of your booking.
Is there an excess on the insurance?
Yes, the excess is tiered as follows:
Aged 25-75: £ 500
Aged 23-24: £ 700
We take the insurance excess as a payment by credit/debit card or BACS and it is refunded within seven days of your last day of hire. We will invoice for the deposit seven days before the start of the hire.
We also take a £ 200 deposit for fuel and cleaning along with the excess at the start of the hire. All will be refunded if the camper is fully fueled and clean when returned.
Doesn’t it get cold in the winter?
The VW California is well insulated and comes with Programmable air parking heater, with radio remote control and additional auxiliary pre-heater. The heater is powered off the diesel, so wont use up your battery and it heats the camper up very quickly.
There's lots of advantages to campervanning out of season: better hire rates on the vans; better rates on sites; and less people competing for site space !
What about power ?
The campervan leisure batteries are excellent and can run the fridge, lights, 12v charge sockets etc for several days without charge.
The California comes with two additional AGM leisure batteries, maintenance-free (one battery with cut-off relay)
The van also has a 16 amp hookup socket and comes with a complimentary cable for when you're parked on a site. This 230V external inlet has a charging feature for the vehicle batteries and internal 230V outlet on the side of the kitchen unit
How do I book ?
We recommend booking your campervan with us as early as possible to ensure availability. To secure a booking we require a 50% deposit. The balance of the booking fee is required four weeks before your first day of hire.
We accept all major credit and debit cards, and BACS transfers. Unfortunately we cannot take cash for vehicle hires.
How about refuelling ?
The camper will come with a full tank of diesel and we ask that you return the same. Shortfalls will be deducted from your deposit.
We ask that you keep an eye on the oil, water and AdBlue levels on the road - we'll show you how to check these if you're unsure. It's very unlikely you'll need to top any of them up.
We're going a long way - is there a mileage limit?
unlimited mileage is included free of charge! If you are travelling to Europe there may be a surcharge, depending on expected distances. Please check at time of booking.
What's included in the hire?
Our hire rates include:
EU & UK fully comprehensive insurance
EU & UK 24 hour breakdown cover
Unlimited mileage (please check for European trips)
VAT at the current rate
Self-drive insurance for 2 drivers. Additional drivers are just £10 per hire

Kitchen utensils, cutlery and crockery etc

Can you deliver the van to us or to an airport? Or can we drop it off somewhere else?
Of course! Just give us a call and we shall help wit the arrangements. There maybe an extra charge for this but we shall look at each request on a case by case basis.
We want to go travelling outside the UK - is that ok?
No problem! Our prices include EU insurance and breakdown cover as standard and at no additional cost. The insurance covers you within mainland EU countries. Unfortunately we can't provide cover outside the EU.
I want to take the van on the ferry, what are the dimensions?
The van is usually classified and costs the same as a car. It measures 4904cm long and 1990cm high (but about 2400cm with roof box or bike rack).
What kitchen and living equipment is included?
Everything for four people to cook, eat and clean. So that includes:
cooking pans
Kettle
cooking utensils
melamine plates & bowls
cups
Cutlery for four
Wineglasses
champagne flutes
Cafetiere
Tea towels
Stove toaster
Plate drying rack
How long will the battery work when not driven or hooked up?
Three days is a reasonable estimate and much longer if driven (or engine started) for half an hour or more. The VW California is excellent for free camping as it has two leisure batteries powering the fridge cool-box, heater fan and lights. Often you get more space at unpowered sites and they can be quieter too. When hooked-up at a campsite it has full 13amp/240v which can be used to power anything within reason. When not hooked-up it has four 12V points and there are also some USB-C connectors for phones.
Do I need to clean the van before returning?
Yes, inside only. Please sweep the floor, vacuum the seats and mattresses and wipe the surfaces, cupboards, fridge and hob. The portaloo (if hired) should also come back clean. Also wash up any kitchen and dining ware used.
How long will the gas last?
A full camping gas 907 bottle will be supplied and will last about three weeks of typical use. It’s only used for the hob. We supply one full bottle at the start of the hire. We ask you to return the empty canisters.
Do you have a toilet?
A compact portable toilet is an optional extra supplied with a little toilet tent and chemicals. It can be fitted into the cupboard. You must wash it out before returning! The portaloo is easy to use and easy to clean.
Do you provide Bedding ?
We prefer customers to bring their own bedding but upon request we can provide 2 x duvets, 2 x sheets & 2 x pillows for a price of £ 15.00 per hire.
